Road and gravel frames are sized in centimetres or letters. Find your height, then check the frame with your inseam: inseam × 0.665 gives the frame size in cm.

Multiply your inseam in cm by 0.665 to get a frame size in cm.

How high should the saddle be?

Start at your inseam × 0.883, measured from the centre of the cranks to the top of the saddle. An 84 cm (33″) inseam gives 74.2 cm (29.2″). Then adjust in small steps.

How much standover clearance do I need?

Straddle the bike with both feet flat. REI suggests about 2.5 cm (1″) of clearance over a level top tube and 5 cm (2″) or more over a sloping one. Brands list standover height in their geometry tables; subtract it from your inseam.

Your inseam points to L: your legs are long for your height, and the frame has to fit your legs.

M also fits. Your height alone says M. It’s shorter and nimbler, with a lower top tube.

Road bike size questions

What size road bike for 5′9″?

Usually M, a 54–55 cm frame. With a long inseam (over about 83.5 cm or 33″) the formula points to L. Specialized calls it a 54 or 56, Canyon an S.

Do I size a gravel bike the same way?

Yes. Gravel frames use the same height bands. Some riders size down for a shorter reach and more control off-road.
